UK inflation: Food prices 'worryingly high' as sugar and milk soar - BBC

Image
Getty Images By Daniel Thomas Business reporter, BBC News Food prices in the UK continued to surge at the fastest rate in nearly 45 years in April, with staples like sugar, milk and pasta up sharply. The rate at which grocery prices rose slowed marginally in the year to April, but at 19.1% is close to record highs. It comes as the overall UK inflation rate fell sharply to hit single figures for the first time since last August. However, it did not decline as much as expected and the chancellor said food prices remained "worryingly high". Inflation is a measure of the cost of living and to calculate it, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) keeps track of the prices of hundreds of everyday items, known as a "basket of goods". The rate has shot up over the last 18 months, as food and energy prices have soared, leaving many household feeling squeezed. Inflation was 8.7% in the year to April - down from 10.1% in March

SINGAPORE: The driver of a Mini Cooper was drunk when he rammed into the back of a food delivery rider who was sitting on an electric bike, killing the 42-year-old man. Andre Low Cheng Jun, 36, was sentenced to 18 months' jail and given a driving ban of 10 years on Wednesday (May 24). He pleaded guilty to one charge each of drink driving and driving without reasonable consideration. The court heard that Low drank one-and-a-half glasses of Martell cognac at Clarke Quay on the night of Mar 23, 2021. He drove his friend home to Potong Pasir and was heading home on Tampines Road when he overtook two cars. The drivers of both cars noticed that Low was driving at a fast speed. The victim had stopped his power-assisted bicycle at the T-junction of Hougang Avenue 1 and was in the middle of the second lane. At about 9.55pm, Low failed to notice the e-bike rider in front of him and picked up speed while going straight. By the time he noticed the victim, it was too late. He braked ha

Chinatown Complex can be a dizzying labyrinth of food, but it does not have to be with this guide to the best hawker food found there. The market and food centre was originally named Kreta Ayer Complex, and was built in 1981 to house street hawkers plying their trade around Chinatown. It started with over 300 stalls and subsequent renovations expanded the number to around 700 in total. More than 250 stalls on the second floor are dedicated to cooked food, and the area is so large that it is divided into different coloured zones. A handful of the original Chinatown hawkers still exist in the centre, including sweet soup specialist 115 Tang Shui , Heng Ji Chicken Rice , and Hill Street Fried Kway Teow . The number of foodborne illness cases continues to be kept at low levels in Singapore, according to authorities. Data comes from statistics on the country’s food supply and food safety for 2022 published by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Singapore is heavily reliant on imports. Livestock, meat, and egg products are more susceptible to contamination, which could lead to foodborne illness in consumers. As of 2022, 42 countries and regions were allowed to export these items to Singapore. SFA said it takes a risk-based approach to food safety guided by science and aligned with international standards to keep foodborne disease down. In 2022, foodborne illness was lower at 24 cases per 100,000 population, compared to 25.6 cases in 2021. Highlights from 2022 Data-driven inspections have allowed SFA to identify and target sites with a higher risk of food safety violations. An increasing percentage of non-compliances were detected at retail establishments from 7 percent in the second q

Getty Images By Noor Nanji Business reporter, BBC News The rate at which food prices are rising fell for the second month in a row in May but remains "incredibly high", says research firm Kantar. Prices were up by 17.2% from a year ago in the four weeks to the middle of May, down from 17.3% last month, it said. Food price rises are expected to ease further later this year, but Kantar said an average annual grocery bill is now up to £833 higher than a year ago. Despite the pressures shoppers still stocked up for the Coronation in May. Sales of wine, fresh cream and pastry all soared as people "got into the spirit" of the occasion and had a go at making the official Coronation quiche, Kantar said.
